The first few seconds of an interaction are the most important. This helps to build a relationship. To begin your interaction when meeting with clients make sure to welcome them. When welcoming a client, you should do so in a warm and genuine manner. This brings a sense of caring and shows an appreciation in your time meeting with the client. This will help them be sure that the meeting with you is worthwhile. When clients feel welcome, they will be more likely to do business with you in the future.

Listen to Them

Listening to clients is an important part of building a good relationship. Listening creates a connection between you and your client. When you speak with your clients, use active listening to help them know that they are valued and respected. Active listening involves understanding what your client says, not just listening to the words. Make eye contact with them and show you are staying engaged by your facial expressions. Watch Your Body Language

Dress Professionally

How you dress heavily influences your first impression with clients. If you look unclean or unkept, you can give off an air of being unprofessional. You want clients to view you as professional, so look the part. A denim skirt is both casual and stylish and makes for a great choice for any occasion. You can wear a blazer or sport coat with some colorful shoes. There are many ways you can dress that allow you to look professional. Make sure you also showcase your personality and seem genuine because your clients will gather information first from you by how you look and dress.

Have a Proper Introduction

Having a proper introduction upon first meeting with a client is essential. Both parties will generally know who each other are, but it is good practice to introduce yourself when you first meet. This will set the stage for your future interaction. If there are others with you during your meeting, make sure you also introduce them as this can make for an awkward situation. When meeting with a client, introduce yourself as you greet them and give them an opportunity to introduce themselves. If there are others with you, state the name of your colleague to introduce them to the client. You can also offer any details if appropriate for your situation

Have Confidence

Having confidence will help you have a good first impression. To help you have confidence, prepare for the meeting with your client by doing some research to learn more about them or about their business. Make sure you are punctual by keeping on schedule and being on time to your appointment. Begin your meeting with some small talk to help break down the ice and get the conversation flowing. Ask your client questions to give them the floor to let them know you value them and help build a relationship. Be positive and show body language to reflect that such as smiling during your conversation.

Use Specific Language

Specific language is key in meeting with clients. They need to know you are sure of yourself and know what you are referring to. Don’t use phrases like “and etc. etc.”, this will leave them questioning what you are saying. You should have confidence in your messages with them and let clients know by using specific language as you communicate these messages with them. Avoid language such as “you could do” or “maybe”. If you have recommendations, state them clearly.

A good first impression is important when meeting with clients. Your first interaction, whether positive or negative will determine how the relationship will move forward. Give a positive first impression to ensure a continuing relationship with the clients you meet.
