Two white wines from Tesco this week, both part of the supermarket’s Finest range. Priced at a very competitive €9 a bottle, both are great value for money. The Soave is richer and more textured, and should appeal to Chardonnay lovers, whereas I suspect Sauvignon drinkers might be drawn to the light, aromatic Riesling.
Tesco Finest Soave Classico Superiore 2019, Italy, €9
Aged for a period in oak barrels, this has an attractive rich creaminess allied to soft, ripe peach fruits and a crisp, dry finish. An atypical and very enjoyable Soave at a keen price. Try it with creamy pasta dishes, either vegetarian or with shellfish.
Tesco Finest Mosel Steep Slopes Riesling 2020, Germany, €9
Made with grapes picked from some of the steepest slopes in the world, this has elegant crisp apple and pear fruits, good cleansing acidity and a decent dry finish. A mere 11.5 per cent in alcohol, this would be perfect on its own or with crab dishes, sushi, sashimi or light salads.
