If you’re wanting to creep it real this Halloween, it’s time to dig deep into your makeup bag and work with what you’ve got. We’ve gone a little Halloween crazy in the office this week, creating two straight-forward, yet frightfully boo-tiful makeup looks that can be recreated easily at home. Whether you’ve got a calendar full of spooky activities and parties, or are taking the kids out trick or treating, if you’ve got it, haunt it!
SUGAR/CANDY SKULL
You don’t need to possess top level makeup skills to go hard on Halloween and for those who want to keep a touch of girliness, the Sugar/Candy Skull is a great option. Calaveras (also referred to as sugar skulls) celebrate Dia de los Muertos, a.k.a. the Day of the Dead, and the designs are reflective of the confectionary displayed on the Mexican holiday. This design is so popular on Instagram and Pinterest, you’ll have more inspiration than you know what to do with, so we’re showing you how to get the look with a few makeup bag staples. So, what do you need? Basically, all the eyeliner and the brightest makeup you own…
If you’ve not been graced with natural pallor, we’d recommend mixing a little white face paint (or sudacrem) in with your foundation to give you that realistic ghoul-like complexion. Then you’re going to need some bright eyeshadows (we went for a mix or purple and pink around the eye), kohl and liquid liner for the details and some glitter pigment if you’re feeling fancy. Contouring with a dark purple or pink eyeshadow brings a fun sculpted look to your face, while finishing with a dark lip colour perfects the look.

Rodial Smokey Eye Pen in Black
This eyeliner provides a perfectly creamy consistency, making creating Halloween makeup a breeze. The gel-effect formula is long-lasting and can easily be blended to create a dramatic smokey eye look. It’s also quick-drying, so you can apply to your waterline without fear of finding yourself with unintentional panda eyes. Use this to shade in your nose, add stitches to your lips and define the eye area.
MUA Twelfth Night Palette
Twelfth night by our fave bargainista beauty brand, MUA, features a combination of neutral, plum, and dark spooky shades. We used the deep plum purple to darken the eye circles and the grey shimmer to add a touch of lustre to the lips!
Lord & Berry Shiny Lip Crayon in Diva
Combining the rich pigment of a lipstick, the nourishing benefits of a balm and the plumping sheen of a gloss, the Lord & Berry Shiny Lip Crayon creates a punchy pout in an instant. We used this all over the lips and lined with black eyeliner for ultimate impact!
The gems are an add on, not necessary, but suitably effective nonetheless. We picked ours up from Primark for a mere £2 – the high street is all over Halloween so you’re bound to find some bargains!
DARK MERMAID
A super easy option for Halloween is to go as your favourite mythical creature, and on this occasion we decided to embrace our inner Mermaid. We felt slightly obligated to make this look a little darker than the usual mermazing makeup looks so we went for a slightly darker eye, with deep jewel tones and sea green glitter for a little extra sparkle. What completes the look are these all in one face jewels from The Gypsy Shrine – simple yet effective! To amp up the look, you could create the look of fish scales on the skin (using old fish nets) or transform yourself with a dark colourful wig. But as it goes, this is a pretty low key, last minute look that can easily be achieved at home.
