Whether you know him for his legendary X-Games performances or his video game franchise, Tony Hawk is pretty much the messiah of skateboarding, no questions asked.
Created in homage of the Birdman’s incredible exploits on four wheels and on two feet, HBO released a new trailer for Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off, an in-depth documentary that charts Hawk’s entire journey from amateur skateboarder to world-famous superstar:
Crafted by photographer and filmmaker Sam Jones, the documentary is is executive produced by Mel Eslyn and the Duplass brothers. It’s set to premiere at SXSW on March 12th, alongside exciting new releases such as Nick Cage’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Richard Linnklater’s Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood.
Here’s the official info text for Till the Wheels Fall Off:
“Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off” is a wide-ranging, definitive look at Hawk’s life and iconic career, and his relationship with the sport with which he’s been synonymous for decades. Hawk, born in San Diego, California, is a pioneer of modern vertical skating and one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. The documentary features unprecedented access, never-before-seen footage, and interviews with Hawk, and prominent figures in the sport including Stacy Peralta, Rodney Mullen, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Neil Blender, Andy MacDonald, Duane Peters, Sam Mortimer, and Christian Hosoi.
While the film covers the many hundreds of injuries Hawk has sustained through his 45 years of skateboarding, he’ll have chalked another down this week that’s been particularly difficult to handlea: femur fracture that the athlete detailed in a lengthy social media post:
Yesterday sucked. I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full comeback; this broken femur recovery will take longer but I’m up for the challenge.
Strangely ironic that it happened on the eve of @HBO releasing a trailer for “Until The Wheels Fall Off,” @samjones’ doc pic.twitter.com/xeVwwtQjVb— Tony Hawk (@tonyhawk) March 9, 2022
In Tony’s words, “There is a strange irony that this happened on the eve of HBO releasing a trailer for “Until The Wheels Fall Off,” Sam Jones’ documentary about my life & career, which has a strong focus on the philosophy of how I/we do this at our age.
The answer is complicated, but ultimately it’s because I have found my sense of purpose and shaped my identity through skating, and it nourishes my mental health immensely.”
Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off premieres on HBO Max, on April 5th 2022.
