John Wilson: Budget buys from Lidl’s wine aisles

If dry January is not for you, and you are still waiting for the dreaded credit card bill to arrive, then consider these two very reasonably priced wines from Lidl. German Riesling seems to be growing in popularity in Ireland and this is a very good medium-dry version.

Rioja Reserva has always been one of Irish wine consumers’ favourite red wines, especially at Christmas when we drink it with turkey, but locally lamb is considered the classic match.

Riesling Feinherb 2020, Braunberger Kurfürstlay, Mosel, Germany, €7.49
With a mere 10.5 per cent alcohol, this seems to promise warmer, sunnier, spring days. Light, fragrant and floral with bright apple fruits and an off-dry finish. A nice aperitif or to drink with fresh herby pasta or frittata.

Cepa Lebrel Rioja Reserva 2017, Spain, €8.49
An oak-aged Rioja with sweet vanilla, ripe plum fruits and an earthy edge. This would go nicely with grilled lamb chops or a roast shoulder studded with garlic.
