John Wilson: A rare find in the Aldi wine aisles

This week, for your supermarket wine shopping, two very keenly priced wines from Aldi to help beat those January blues. Both will go very nicely with a wide variety of foods.

Château Les Trois Manoirs 2018, Cru Bourgeois, Médoc, €9.99
It is not often you come across a cru bourgeois from the Médoc, home to many of the great names of Bordeaux, for less than €10. This blend, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is restrained, with elegant savoury blackcurrants and a nice smooth finish. Serve with roast lamb or beef, a striploin steak or mushroom-based vegetarian dishes.

Specially Selected Kooliburra Clare Valley Riesling 2020, Australia, €8.99
For many people, the word Riesling denotes a sweet wine. Yet a great many, including this wine, are bone dry. The Clare Valley in Australia produces some of the finest dry Rieslings in the southern hemisphere, but rarely at this price. It is fresh and crisp (and dry), with green apple fruits and a zesty lime acidity. Great value for money and perfect with most fish dishes or mild Thai green curries – chicken or prawn.
